Military Matters: Fur the Brave

At the Humane Society of North Texas, we see strong bonds developed through shared struggle and quiet loyalty every day, especially among the veterans and active service members who walk through our doors. That’s why we created Fur the Brave: a program that honors those who’ve served by removing financial barriers to adoption and connecting them with animals who stand by someone through thick and thin.

After deployments, training, or the transition back to civilian life, coming home to a wagging tail or a purring companion can make all the difference. Pets don’t care about rank or medals. They just know when you need someone in your corner. Animals can help ease isolation, reduce anxiety, and give structure to days that sometimes feel unstructured. For many veterans, that four-legged friend becomes a daily reminder that they’re not alone.

What Fur the Brave Offers

Through Fur the Brave, qualifying veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, and Gold Star families can adopt eligible dogs and cats at no cost. We’re talking spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed animals ready to head home with you the same day.

Dogs need to be:

●       At least 6 months old

●       Weigh 40+ pounds

●       Or have special needs

Cats need to be:

●       6 months or older 

●       Or have special medical considerations

Every adoption also includes a free vet exam, basic supplies, and 30 days of pet insurance to help you both get started on the right paw.

To make it happen, HSNT relies on community sponsorships and donations. These wonderful sponsorships and donations cover the costs of the alter, microchip, vaccinations, deworming, and vet exam for each pet. HSNT strives to make the adoption process as seamless and hassle-free as possible, cutting through the red tape and lowering the number of requirements compared to similar programs.

HSNT’s requirements include bringing one of the following items to your adoption appointment.

●       Current Defense Department identification card (active duty, National Guard, Reserve)

●       Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214) for Veterans

●       Defense Department dependent identification card, Report of Casualty (DD-1300)

●       State-issued Gold Star ID card for Gold Star family members.

We’ve already seen some beautiful matches. Like Anakin the cat, who found his very own “Jedi Master” of a dad. Those moments never get old. The way a once-shy dog lights up when their person walks in the room, or how a senior cat curls up in a lap like they’ve been waiting for that exact human their whole life.

More Than Just Adoptions: Healing at the Ranch

Fur the Brave isn’t our only way of saying thank you. Our Equine Ranch Wellness Program opens its gates to veterans and cancer survivors at no charge. At HSNT's Equine Ranch, rescued horses and people meet each other halfway, earning trust, presence, and patience together through gentle groundwork and connection-based horsemanship.

One participant, a cancer survivor, shared how bonding with a horse named JJ brought light back into her life after everything she’d endured. “I’m not just surviving,” she said. “I am thriving.” That kind of feedback hits deep. The horses get a second chance at a good life too, often going on to find forever homes once they’ve rebuilt their confidence.
