Believe it or not, superstitions still exist;, unfortunately, this has affected black cats. Despite being intelligent, loyal, and highly affectionate, these dark-colored felines are extremely misunderstood. The Humane Society of North Texas is here to set the record straight. Here are four common black cat myths, debunked!
Myth #1: Black Cats Are Bad Luck
If you’ve ever been worried when a black cat crossed your path? Well, we have good news! There is no bad curse on your life because of these cats. According to the ASPCA, this common myth dates back to the Middle Ages, when black cats were associated with misfortune and evil spirits. Despite being debunked several times, people still believe in this superstition. Here at HSNT, we come in contact with black cats of all shapes, personalities, and sizes, and we can assure you that none of them have brought us bad luck!
Myth #2: Black Cats Are Meaner Than Light Colored Ones
It’s easy to assume that black cats are hostile because of their mysterious nature. However, a cat’s personality depends on many factors, such as gender, past traumas, family history, and environment. An article by The International Cat Association (TICA) proves this by explaining a 2023 cat personality study done in 2023. While an orange tabby may seem nicer due to their chattiness, black cats are more than capable of being just as social.
Myth #3: Black Cats Can Shapeshift
Believe it or not, there are myths that these dark felines are witches in disguise. Just like the origin of myth #1, cats have gained a bad reputation over the centuries. Witches were accused of having supernatural influence, and cats were guilty by association. The portrayal of witches and black cats in modern-day film only added fuel to the fire. The truth is that black cats do not shape-shift, but, how cool would that be if they could?
Myth #4: Black cats are impossible to adopt out
Due to misconceptions about black cats, it’s common to think that they have a hard time finding homes. That is far from the truth. Black cats find loving homes every day. HSNT has seen many black cats come and go, and we take pride in being the bridge that connects people and animals.
