Help a Horse and Help a Veteran
Horses are central to our Western way of life — woven into the history, heritage, and daily rhythm of North Texas. This region is home to one of the largest horse populations in the United States, a distinction that carries both pride and responsibility.
As North Texas continues to grow, so does the demand for equine care and intervention. With that growth comes an increase in cases of neglect, owner surrender, and situations requiring coordinated response from law enforcement and trusted community partners.
The need is growing — and so is the call to act, as well as an opportunity to help Veterans heal. That responsibility requires infrastructure, expertise, and a trusted place to turn when horses are at risk.
The Power of Partnership — Human and Horse
At the Humane Society of North Texas Equine Ranch, partnership is the foundation. The 33-acre ranch serves horses who have experienced neglect or abandonment, providing what every horse deserves: safety, skilled care, and a clear path forward. As the only large-scale horse rescue facility in North Texas dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses, the HSNT Equine Ranch works in coordination with law enforcement agencies, county officials, and families in crisis when horses are at risk. Since opening in 2015, more than 1,000 horses have entered their program, where structured rehabilitation and experienced horsemanship prepare each for responsible adoption.
Grounded in skilled horsemanship and individualized care, the rehabilitation model in use restores health, rebuilds trust, and prepares each horse for long-term success in a permanent home. As demand continues to grow, the mission remains clear: intervene when needed, rehabilitate with expertise, and ensure every horse has a safe path forward.
The calls continue to increase; from law enforcement agencies, from families facing difficult circumstances, from communities seeking solutions. When others cannot step in, the HSNT team does. And they do so with responsibility, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to both animal welfare and community partnership.
On National Help a Horse Day, April 26, stand in advocacy for horses across North Texas and beyond by raising awareness about cruelty and neglect, championing responsible ownership, and reinforcing the critical role rescue and rehabilitation play in giving these horses a second chance.
This work is possible because of strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies, veterinarians, trainers, adopters, donors, and a community committed to responsible stewardship.
With your support, the HSNT Equine Ranch will continue to be a place where trust is rebuilt, lives are restored, and second chances lead to lasting homes.
How You Can Help
Together, we can preserve our Western heritage, protect the horses who help define it, and assist Veterans.
Tell a Veteran or Cancer Survivor
At the HSNT Equine Ranch, healing flows both ways. Rescued horses help veterans, cancer survivors, and individuals overcoming trauma rediscover calm, confidence, and strength. Rehabilitating rescue horses not only aids their recovery but also provides purpose by helping them find their forever homes. Participants in the HSNT Equine Wellness Program engage in quiet groundwork where communication happens through energy, presence, and breath. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and community partners, the HSNT Equine Wellness Program is offered to participants at no cost.
Share The Mission
At any given time, the ranch cares for 30 to 35 horses — each on a structured path toward health, stability, and adoption. Our rehabilitation program is grounded in skilled, connection-based horsemanship that builds trust and prepares horses for responsible placement. Help expand the reach by sharing this message with others.
