Introducing Our Golden Years Companion Program: Free Pet Adoptions for Seniors

At the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), we believe that everyone deserves the unconditional love and companionship of a pet—especially our senior citizens. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our Golden Years Companion program, offering free adoptions of adult cats and dogs (1 year and older) to citizens aged 65 and older.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of a special donor, we can now remove the financial barrier that often prevents seniors from adopting a pet. We recognize that for many older adults, a furry friend is more than just a pet—they are a source of comfort, companionship, and joy.

Studies have shown that pet ownership can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and even improve mental well-being. This initiative ensures that seniors who may be on a fixed income still have the opportunity to experience the profound bond between humans and animals.

How It Works

• Seniors aged 65 and older can adopt an adult cat or dog (1 year and older) for FREE.

• Simply mention the Golden Years Companion program when you visit any of our HSNT adoption centers (Keller Regional, Saxe-Forte in Fort Worth, or any trailer adoption event).

• Take home a loving, loyal pet and start creating new memories together!

Why This Program Matters

Many shelters are full of adult pets who are often overlooked in favor of younger animals. However, adult pets come with incredible benefits—they’re typically already house-trained, their personalities are well-developed, and they are often calmer and more suited for the relaxed lifestyle of a senior companion. By adopting a pet through this program, seniors not only gain a new best friend but also help give a shelter animal a second chance at life.

This special initiative also honors Liz, Quinn, and Reed, celebrating the joy and companionship that pets bring into our lives. It is our way of giving back to the community and ensuring that loving animals find the homes they deserve. This program is available for a limited time.
