Regarding concerns about lowered adoption fees
The HSNT MEGA Adoption Event on August 15-16 is fast approaching, with all adoption fees being $25 or less. Due to the lowered adoption fees, advocates worry there would be a high return turnout with pets that are adopted; fret not, statistics show this isn't the case.
Many reasons for pets to be returned to the shelter have nothing to do with how much the adoption fee was; researchers from the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, show that out of 24,000 pets adopted, only 7%-20% are returned, mostly due to behavioral problems and incompatibility with existing pets. Additionally, research by ASPCA PRO has shown that lowering or waiving adoption fees does not reduce the bond adopters form with their pets. In other words, a higher adoption fee does not guarantee a better home, and a lower fee does not make adopters any less committed.
Here are some tips to help you out at adoption events

Large adoption events offer an incredible opportunity to meet many adoptable pets in one place. Since these events can be busy, arriving prepared can help you have a smoother experience and focus on finding the perfect companion.
Plan for future expenses: While adoption fees are lowered, pets still require constant care, including food, vet visits, vaccine costs, grooming, etc.
Consider your lifestyle: Thinking about your current lifestyle can help you find a pet that is better suited for you. Consider things such as your schedule, living situation, and experience handling pets.
Don’t be afraid to ask around: Use shelters' knowledge of pets' history, medical care, behavior, etc. They can help you find a pet suitable for you.
Prepare your home: Having your house prepared for a new incoming pet can help the pet adjust and transition into a new environment, this includes, food and water bowls, a bed, toys, leash, carrier, etc.
Give your pet time: Transitioning from shelter life can be overwhelming; be patient with your pet as they learn new routines and get used to their new surroundings.
