Elmer the Kitten Finds Forever Home

When a frantic Good Samaritan arrived at the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) with a 4-week-old kitten covered in a thick white substance near closing time, several staff members were still in the building and immediately rushed to help. At first, they were unsure what he was covered in, but when they attempted to bathe the tiny kitten, they quickly realized he had been coated in an incredibly sticky substance that soap and water couldn’t penetrate.

They named him Elmer.

Elmer wasn’t covered in simple, easy-to-remove glue. He had been found submerged in a vat of heavy-duty industrial adhesive so severe that it was preventing the tiny kitten from eating or drinking.

HSNT’s medical team immediately realized they were in a race against time. As the adhesive hardened, it would become increasingly difficult and painful to remove, placing Elmer’s life at serious risk. Staff also feared the glue may have been ingested or entered sensitive areas of his body, including his eyes, ears, nose, or mouth, which could have caused devastating internal complications.

When water, Dawn dish soap, and traditional solvents proved ineffective in removing the adhesive, the HSNT team began carefully testing other safe methods. After trying several options, including olive oil and mineral oil, they ultimately discovered that canola oil was the most effective way to dissolve the thick industrial glue coating Elmer’s tiny body.

Once most of the glue had been removed, Elmer was wrapped in gauze to help absorb excess oil and rest. For nearly seven hours, HSNT’s team worked tirelessly to save Elmer, carefully soaking his tiny body in canola oil to slowly and safely loosen the hardened adhesive covering his fur. Throughout the entire process, staff closely monitored the 4-week-old kitten’s comfort, temperature, and safety. After two days of treatment, countless baths, and nearly two gallons of canola oil, Elmer’s spark slowly began to return.

As Elmer continued healing, his story quickly captured hearts around the world. Once he was medically stable, the HSNT team began reviewing hundreds of adoption inquiries submitted by people hoping to give him a home.

During that time, Elmer was placed in foster care with an HSNT foster and adopter who simply stepped up to help while he recovered. Leah, who lost her husband in October 2025, immediately formed a deep connection with Elmer, and it quickly became clear the feeling was mutual. He made her laugh again and brought a sense of joy and companionship back into her life that she had deeply missed for months following the loss of her husband.

After weeks of uncertainty and recovery, Elmer is now thriving in the home where he was always meant to be.

His story is a powerful reflection of the work done every day at the Humane Society of North Texas. With the support of our community, lives can be changed — and in Elmer’s case, a tiny kitten who arrived covered in glue was given the opportunity to heal, trust again, and finally experience what love feels like.

Elmer's Adoption Day! Happy tails to you!
