Mitzi
After losing 4 dogs in 6 months (cancer, old age) in 2023, I thought I needed a break to heal my very broken heart. As a volunteer at HSNT, being around shelter dogs both hurt and helped. But, in January 2024, I adopted Ruthie. A senior boxer mix, she was found as a stray and had bad hips. And while she was only with me for 8 months — her mobility deteriorated quickly and I had to say goodbye — she made me realize I needed dogs as much as they needed me. But I knew I wanted to adopt another senior. A broken wrist made me hesitant to get a big dog, but then I met 9-year-old Mitzi while I was volunteering at the Fort Worth location. She reminded me a bit of Ruthie. It seems I have a type: dogs with sad eyes who need a lot of TLC.
Mitzi was a bit aloof at first, but I visited her and took her for walks several times a week so we could get to know each other. I signed up to foster her this past March over spring break. She settled in quickly, enjoying car rides, the comforts of the people's bed, and the wonders of a bath for her itchy skin. At the end of her stay, I made Mitzi an official member of my family.
I urge everyone not to overlook the senior pets available for adoption. While time with them might be shorter, the love they have to offer is limitless.
