Adoption Process

HSNT strives to make our adoption process a positive and straight-forward experience for every animal lover who enters our building!

When you enter our facility, you will:

  1. Sign in.

  2. Discuss your hopes and expectations for your new pet with an Adoption Counselor so that they can help you find a great fit!

  3. Browse adoptable animals and visit with those you are interested in adopting.

  4. After you select the pet you’d like to adopt, you will complete the adoption with a member of our staff!

In most cases, pets can go home with their new family that day!

Please be aware that all potential adopters will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Have current identification showing your current address (if the address on your license is outdated, please bring a utility bill with your current address)

Please note: HSNT strives to spay or neuter all animals before they enter our adoption program. However, in the event you select a pet that has not been altered, you will need to leave the animal at the shelter for a few days until they can be fixed.

Adoption Services & Fees

The adoption fees at the Humane Society of North Texas range from $15 to $285 for pets and up to $2,500 for equine.

Adoption fees are determined based on a variety of factors such as age, size, length of stay and public demand. We do our best to ensure our adoption fees are reasonable and affordable to the general public. That is why we set fees well below the actual cost of your pets care during their stay. The adoption fees help HSNT to cover a portion of the cost of your animal’s medical care, food, and housing during their stay with us.

Each animal adopted from HSNT is:

  • Spayed or neutered

  • Microchipped

  • Current on vaccinations

  • Dewormed

  • Heartworm tested (dogs over 6 months old)

  • Combo tested (cats and kittens)

Every pet adoption also comes with:

  • 30 Days of pet health insurance

  • A free vet exam

  • A cardboard carrier or slip-lead leash
