Our goals
- To provide temporary care for an animal which is not yet ready for adoption
- To monitor an animal to help in determining its health status
- To obtain information about its behavior and personality
- To protect the animal from risk of disease that may be present due to the unknown origin of many of the stray animals brought to HSNT
- To provide socialization and training to enhance their life experience
- To provide security and confidence to an animal that may have a fairly long-term recovery period
In order to become an HSNT foster parent, you need to fill out an application online (see below) or stop by and pick one up at the shelter. The general application form is used to locate an appropriate home for the animal. It makes us aware of who is caring for the animal, how often someone is home, knowledge of other household pets and of course, the foster parents' preferences. It is important to list what type of animals you prefer to foster.
The next step to the process is the home inspection. Once the application is complete, a HSNT representative will contact you to set up an appointment for a home inspection. The home inspection involves the representative observing where the animals will be kept, reviewing foster program guidelines and answering any questions that you may have.
Once this is complete, your name will be added to the foster parent list according to your preferences. Once an animal becomes available, you will be contacted by the shelter. If you are available at that time, arrangements will be made for you to pick up the animal at the shelter. If you cannot take the animal at that time, then your name will return to the list for the future animals needing your help.
All animals are given their first set of inoculations contingent upon age and health before been taken to their foster home. The foster parent is given the animal's profile, a copy of the signed foster agreement and emergency phone numbers should the parent need to contact us.
